The full text of Al-Masad
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿١﴾
tabbat yadā 'abī lahabiw watabb
May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
Abū Lahab (the Prophet's uncle), who was an enemy of Islām.
-
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿٢﴾
mā 'aghnā ʿanhu māluhū wamā kasab
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.
-
سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿٣﴾
sayaṣlā nāran dhāta lahab
He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
-
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ ﴿٤﴾
wamra'atuhū ḥammālata l-ḥaṭab
And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.
She used to put thorns in the Prophet's path and slander him (ﷺ). The word "firewood" was used by the Arabs to allude to slander and backbiting.

فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ ﴿٥﴾
fī jīdihā ḥablum mim masad
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
In the transliteration, “|”: the reciter stops; “·”: sakt, a brief cut without taking a breath.

The meaning of Al-Masad, verse by verse

- 111:1
Both hands of the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Abū Lahab son of ‘Abdul Muṭṭalib have lost because of the loss of his actions; he used to harm the Prophet (peace be upon him). His efforts are in vain.
- 111:2
How much can his wealth and his children benefit him? They cannot defend him against the punishment, nor bring any mercy to him.
- 111:3
On the Day of Judgement, he will soon enter the flaring hellfire and suffer its heat.
- 111:4
And his wife Umm Jamīl who would also harm the Prophet (peace be upon him) by throwing thorns into his path, will also enter it.
- 111:5
Around her neck will be tightly bound a rope with which she will be dragged into the hellfire.
