The full text of An-Nazi'at

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِ غَرْقًا ﴿١﴾

wan-nāziʿāti gharqā

By those [angels] who extract with violence

i.e., those who tear out the souls of those destined for Hell.
وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِ نَشْطًا ﴿٢﴾

wan-nāshiṭāti nashṭā

And [by] those who remove with ease

i.e., those angels who ease out the souls of those destined for Paradise.
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ سَبْحًا ﴿٣﴾

was-sābiḥāti sabḥā

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming

Speeding to execute Allāh's commands.
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِ سَبْقًا ﴿٤﴾

fas-sābiqāti sabqā

And those who race each other in a race

Racing to deliver the souls of the believers to Paradise.
فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمْرًا ﴿٥﴾

fal-mudabbirāti 'amrā

And those who arrange [each] matter,

According to Allāh's decree.
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ ﴿٦﴾

yawma tarjufu r-rājifah

On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],
تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ ﴿٧﴾

tatbaʿuha r-rādifah

There will follow it the subsequent [one].
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ ﴿٨﴾

qulūbuy yawma'idhiw wājifah

Hearts, that Day, will tremble,

Those of the disbelievers who denied the Resurrection.
أَبْصَـٰرُهَا خَـٰشِعَةٌ ﴿٩﴾

abṣāruhā khāshiʿah

Their eyes humbled.

Those of the disbelievers.
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ ﴿١٠﴾

yaqūlūna 'a'innā lamardūdūna fi l-ḥāfirah

They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?
أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَـٰمًا نَّخِرَةً ﴿١١﴾

a'idhā kunnā ʿiẓāman nakhirah

Even if we should be decayed bones?"

The disbelievers say this in ridicule of the warning.
قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ ﴿١٢﴾

qālū tilka 'idhan karratun khāsirah

They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."

i.e., "If that were so, we would not be able to escape punishment."
فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ ﴿١٣﴾

fa'innamā hiya zajratuw wāḥidah

Indeed, it will be but one shout,
فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ ﴿١٤﴾

fa'idhā hum bis-sāhirah

And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ ﴿١٥﴾

hal 'atāka ḥadīthu mūsā

Has there reached you the story of Moses? -
إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى ﴿١٦﴾

idh nādāhu rabbuhū bil-wādi l-muqaddasi ṭuwā

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ﴿١٧﴾

idhhab 'ilā firʿawna 'innahū ṭaghā

"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ ﴿١٨﴾

faqul hal laka 'ilā 'an tazakkā

And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ ﴿١٩﴾

wa'ahdiyaka 'ilā rabbika fatakhshā

And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْـَٔايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ﴿٢٠﴾

fa'arāhu l-āyata l-kubrā

And he showed him the greatest sign,

i.e., the miracle of his staff becoming a great snake.
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ ﴿٢١﴾

fakadhdhaba waʿaṣā

But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ ﴿٢٢﴾

thumma 'adbara yasʿā

Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting].

An alternative meaning is "running [from the snake]."
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ ﴿٢٣﴾

faḥashara fanādā

And he gathered [his people] and called out
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ﴿٢٤﴾

faqāla 'ana rabbukumu l-aʿlā

And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ ﴿٢٥﴾

fa'akhadhahu llāhu nakāla l-ākhirati wal-ūlā

So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]..

i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself up as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ ﴿٢٦﴾

inna fī dhālika laʿibratal limay yakhshā

Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].
ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا ﴿٢٧﴾

a'antum 'ashaddu khalqan 'ami s-samā' | banāhā

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.
رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا ﴿٢٨﴾

rafaʿa samkahā fasawwāhā

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا ﴿٢٩﴾

wa'aghṭasha laylahā wa'akhraja ḍuḥāhā

And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

i.e., created the day from within the surrounding darkness.
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ ﴿٣٠﴾

wal-arḍa baʿda dhālika daḥāhā

And after that He spread the earth.
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا ﴿٣١﴾

akhraja minhā mā'ahā wamarʿāhā

He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا ﴿٣٢﴾

wal-jibāla 'arsāhā

And the mountains He set firmly
مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ ﴿٣٣﴾

matāʿal lakum wali'anʿāmikum

As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ﴿٣٤﴾

fa'idhā jā'ati ṭ-ṭāmmatu l-kubrā

But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -

i.e., the Day of Resurrection.
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ ﴿٣٥﴾

yawma yatadhakkaru l-insānu mā saʿā

The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ ﴿٣٦﴾

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu limay yarā

And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ ﴿٣٧﴾

fa'ammā man ṭaghā

So as for he who transgressed
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا ﴿٣٨﴾

wa'āthara l-ḥayāta d-dunyā

And preferred the life of the world,
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ ﴿٣٩﴾

fa'inna l-jaḥīma hiya l-ma'wā

Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ ﴿٤٠﴾

wa'ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihī wanaha n-nafsa ʿani l-hawā

But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ ﴿٤١﴾

fa'inna l-jannata hiya l-ma'wā

Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا ﴿٤٢﴾

yas'alūnaka ʿani s-sāʿati 'ayyāna mursāhā

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?

Literally, "resting" or "establishment."
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ ﴿٤٣﴾

fīma 'anta min dhikrāhā

In what [position] are you that you should mention it?

Meaning that Muḥammad (ﷺ) had no knowledge of it, so how could he inform them?
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ﴿٤٤﴾

ilā rabbika muntahāhā

To your Lord is its finality.

i.e., its destination and termination. And to Him belongs ultimate knowledge of it.
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا ﴿٤٥﴾

innamā 'anta mundhiru may yakhshāhā

You are only a warner for those who fear it.
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا ﴿٤٦﴾

ka'annahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū 'illā ʿashiyyatan 'aw ḍuḥāhā

It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.

i.e., the Hour, the Resurrection.

The meaning of An-Nazi'at, verse by verse

79:1
Allah takes an oath on the angels who pull out the souls of the disbelievers with severity and harshness.
79:2
And He also takes an oath on the angels who gently remove the souls of the believers with ease and smoothness.
79:3
He also takes an oath on the angels who float from the heavens to the earth, by the command of Allah.
79:4
And He also takes an oath on the angels who compete with one another to carry out the command of Allah.
79:5
He also takes an oath on the angels who execute the decree of Allah that He has commanded them to, i.e. the angels appointed to the deeds of the servants. He takes an oath on all that, that He will definitely resurrect them for accounting and requital.
79:6
On the day when the earth will tremble upon the first blowing of the horn.
79:7
The second blow will follow it.
79:8
The hearts of some people will be fearful on that day.
79:9
The effects of humiliation will be apparent on their faces.
79:10
They would say: “Will we be returned to life after we have died?”
79:11
“When we will become decomposed, empty bones, will we be returned then?!”
79:12
They say: “If we are returned, that return will be a loss, and the person returning will be defrauded.”
79:13
The matter of the resurrection is easy. It will only be a single scream from the angel appointed to blow.
79:14
Then suddenly, everyone will be alive on the face of the earth, after they were dead within it.
79:15
O Messenger! Has the news of Moses, his Lord and enemy, Pharaoh, come to you?
79:16
When his Lord may He be glorified called out to him at the blessed valley of Tuwa.
79:17
Among the things He said to him was: “Go to Pharaoh; indeed, he has trespassed the limits of oppression and arrogance.”
79:18
“Then say to him: “O Pharaoh! Do you want to purify yourself from disbelief and sins?”
79:19
“I will guide you to your Lord who has created you and provided for you so that you can fear Him and act according to His pleasure, together with refraining from things that cause His wrath.”
79:20
Moses (peace be upon him) then showed him the great miracle that proved he was a Messenger from his Lord, i.e. the Hand and the Staff.
79:21
Pharaoh did not do anything except reject these signs, and disobeyed the instruction Moses (peace be upon him) gave to him.
79:22
He then turned away from bringing faith in what Moses had brought.
79:23
And turned his attention to mobilising his armies to overpower Moses. He called out to his people, saying:
79:24
“I am your highest Lord; you are not to be obedient to anyone except me.”
79:25
So Allah seized him and punished him in the world by drowning him in the sea, and He will punish him in the afterlife by entering him into the severest punishment.
79:26
Indeed, in My punishing of Pharaoh in the world and the afterlife, there is admonition for the one who fears Allah, because it is he who benefits from the admonitions.
79:27
O rejectors of the resurrection! Is your origination, or the origination of the heavens that He has created, harder for Allah?
79:28
He raised the peak of the heaven vertically, and made it smooth: there is no break, crack or defect in it.
79:29
And He darkened its night when the sun set, while manifesting its light when it rose.
79:30
As for the earth after He created the heavens, He spread it out and placed within it its benefits.
79:31
He extracted water from it in the form of flowing springs, and made plants grow on it which the livestock graze.
79:32
And He made the mountains stand firm on the earth.
79:33
O people! All that is for your benefit, and for the benefit of your livestock. So whoever created all that, is not incapable of recreating you anew.
79:34
So when the second blowing will come, which will cover everything with its terror, and the judgement will occur.
79:35
On the day when it will come, the human will remember what deeds he sent forth: whether good or bad.
79:36
And hell will be brought and unveiled clearly for all to see.
79:37
As for the one who transgressed the limits into deviance.
79:38
And gave priority to the temporary worldly life over the everlasting afterlife.
79:39
Then indeed, the hellfire is his abode he will take shelter towards.
79:40
And as for the one who feared his standing before his Lord and stopped himself from following his desires that were made impermissible by Allah, then Paradise is his abode he will take shelter towards.
79:41
And as for the one who feared his standing before his Lord and stopped himself from following his desires that were made impermissible by Allah, then Paradise is his abode he will take shelter towards.
79:42
O Messenger! These rejectors of the resurrection ask you: “When will the Hour occur?”
79:43
You do not have any knowledge regarding it that you can mention to them; nor is it befitting of your duty to, because your duty is only to prepare for it.
79:44
The total knowledge of the Hour is with your Lord alone.
79:45
You are only a warner to the one who fears the Hour, because he is the one who benefits from your warning.
79:46
It is as if on the day they see the Hour for themselves, they will not have remained in their worldly lives except for a single evening or morning.
