The full text of Al-Qamar

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ ﴿١﴾

iqtarabati s-sāʿatu wanshaqqa l-qamar

The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].

This was a sign given by Allāh to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) when the Quraysh challenged him to show them a miracle.
وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ ﴿٢﴾

wa'iy yaraw 'āyatay yuʿriḍū wayaqūlū siḥrum mustamirr

And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."

Or "Continuing magic."
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ﴿٣﴾

wakadhdhabū wattabaʿū 'ahwā'ahum | wakullu 'amrim mustaqirr

And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ ﴿٤﴾

walaqad jā'ahum mina l-ambā'i mā fīhi muzdajar

And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.
حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ ﴿٥﴾

ḥikmatum bālighah | famā tughni n-nudhur

Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ ﴿٦﴾

fatawalla ʿanhum | yawma yadʿu d-dāʿi 'ilā shay'in nukur

So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding,

Said to be an angel announcing the account and judgement.
خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ ﴿٧﴾

khushshaʿan 'abṣāruhum yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi ka'annahum jarādum muntashir

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,
مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ ﴿٨﴾

muhṭiʿīna 'ila d-dāʿ | yaqūlu l-kāfirūna hādhā yawmun ʿasir

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."
۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ ﴿٩﴾

kadhdhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin fakadhdhabū ʿabdanā waqālū majnūnuw wazdujir

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ ﴿١٠﴾

fadaʿā rabbahū 'annī maghlūbun fantaṣir

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."
فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ ﴿١١﴾

fafataḥnā 'abwāba s-samā'i bimā'im munhamir

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ ﴿١٢﴾

wafajjarna l-arḍa ʿuyūnan faltaqa l-mā'u ʿalā 'amrin qad qudir

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.
وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ ﴿١٣﴾

waḥamalnāhu ʿalā dhāti 'alwāḥiw wadusur

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,
تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ ﴿١٤﴾

tajrī bi'aʿyuninā jazā'al liman kāna kufir

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.
وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿١٥﴾

walaqat taraknāhā 'āyatan fahal mim muddakir

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿١٦﴾

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

To those after them, who were expected to derive a lesson from previous occurrences.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿١٧﴾

walaqad yassarna l-qur'āna lidh-dhikri fahal mim muddakir

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿١٨﴾

kadhdhabat ʿādun fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ ﴿١٩﴾

innā 'arsalnā ʿalayhim rīḥan ṣarṣaran fī yawmi naḥsim mustamirr

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,
تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ ﴿٢٠﴾

tanziʿu n-nāsa ka'annahum 'aʿjāzu nakhlim munqaʿir

Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

From their hiding places.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿٢١﴾

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿٢٢﴾

walaqad yassarna l-qur'āna lidh-dhikri fahal mim muddakir

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ﴿٢٣﴾

kadhdhabat thamūdu bin-nudhur

Thamūd denied the warning.
فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ ﴿٢٤﴾

faqālū 'abasharam minnā wāḥidan nattabiʿuhū 'innā 'idhal lafī ḍalāliw wasuʿur

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

i.e., the prophet Ṣāliḥ.
أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ ﴿٢٥﴾

a'ulqiya dh-dhikru ʿalayhi mim bayninā bal huwa kadhdhābun 'ashir

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."
سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ ﴿٢٦﴾

sayaʿlamūna ghadam mani l-kadhdhābu l-ashir

They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.
إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ ﴿٢٧﴾

innā mursilu n-nāqati fitnatal lahum fartaqibhum waṣṭabir

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

This and the following verse are an address to Ṣāliḥ (upon him be peace).
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ ﴿٢٨﴾

wanabbi'hum 'anna l-mā'a qismatum baynahum | kullu shirbim muḥtaḍar

And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn].

i.e., between the tribe of Thamūd and the she-camel - a day for each to drink.
فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ ﴿٢٩﴾

fanādaw ṣāḥibahum fataʿāṭā faʿaqar

But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her].

i.e., the worst and most despicable among them.
Or "he took," referring to his sword or to the she-camel.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿٣٠﴾

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ ﴿٣١﴾

innā 'arsalnā ʿalayhim ṣayḥataw wāḥidatan fakānū kahashīmi l-muḥtaẓir

Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿٣٢﴾

walaqad yassarna l-qur'āna lidh-dhikri fahal mim muddakir

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ﴿٣٣﴾

kadhdhabat qawmu lūṭim bin-nudhur

The people of Lot denied the warning.
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ ﴿٣٤﴾

innā 'arsalnā ʿalayhim ḥāṣiban 'illā 'āla lūṭ | najjaynāhum bisaḥar

Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.
نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ ﴿٣٥﴾

niʿmatam min ʿindinā | kadhālika najzī man shakar

As favor from Us. Thus do We reward he who is grateful.
وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ﴿٣٦﴾

walaqad 'andharahum baṭshatanā fatamāraw bin-nudhur

And he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning.
وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿٣٧﴾

walaqad rāwadūhu ʿan ḍayfihī faṭamasnā 'aʿyunahum fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur

And they had demanded from him his guests, but We obliterated their eyes, [saying], "Taste My punishment and warning."
وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ﴿٣٨﴾

walaqad ṣabbaḥahum bukratan ʿadhābum mustaqirr

And there came upon them by morning an abiding punishment.
فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ﴿٣٩﴾

fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur

So taste My punishment and warning.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿٤٠﴾

walaqad yassarna l-qur'āna lidh-dhikri fahal mim muddakir

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ ﴿٤١﴾

walaqad jā'a 'āla firʿawna n-nudhur

And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.
كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ ﴿٤٢﴾

kadhdhabū bi'āyātinā kullihā fa'akhadhnāhum 'akhdha ʿazīzim muqtadir

They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.
أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ ﴿٤٣﴾

akuffārukum khayrum min 'ulā'ikum 'am lakum barā'atun fi z-zubur

Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ ﴿٤٤﴾

am yaqūlūna naḥnu jamīʿum muntaṣir

Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?
سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ ﴿٤٥﴾

sayuhzamu l-jamʿu wayuwallūna d-dubur

[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].

This foretold event took place on the day of Badr.
بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ ﴿٤٦﴾

bali s-sāʿatu mawʿiduhum was-sāʿatu 'ad-hā wa'amarr

But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ ﴿٤٧﴾

inna l-mujrimīna fī ḍalāliw wasuʿur

Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness..

Or "in blazing fires."
يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ ﴿٤٨﴾

yawma yusḥabūna fi n-nāri ʿalā wujūhihim dhūqū massa saqar

The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said], "Taste the touch of Saqar."

One of the proper names of Hell.
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ ﴿٤٩﴾

innā kulla shay'in khalaqnāhu biqadar

Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ ﴿٥٠﴾

wamā 'amrunā 'illā wāḥidatun kalamḥim bil-baṣar

And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.
وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿٥١﴾

walaqad 'ahlaknā 'ashyāʿakum fahal mim muddakir

And We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember?

i.e., those similar to you in attitude and behavior when they rejected Allāh's messengers.
وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ ﴿٥٢﴾

wakullu shay'in faʿalūhu fi z-zubur

And everything they did is in written records.
وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ ﴿٥٣﴾

wakullu ṣaghīriw wakabīrim mustaṭar

And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ ﴿٥٤﴾

inna l-muttaqīna fī jannātiw wanahar

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers,
فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ ﴿٥٥﴾

fī maqʿadi ṣidqin ʿinda malīkim muqtadir

In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.

Who accomplishes whatever He wills whenever He wills.

54:1
The coming of the Hour is close and the moon split in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the splitting of which was one of the tangible miracles of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
54:2
When the idolaters see any sign or proof of the truthfulness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) they turn away from accepting it and say: The evidence and proof we have seen are false sorcery.
54:3
They denied the truth that came to them and followed their desires in this denial. Any matter, whether good or bad, will occur to the one who deserves it on the Day of Judgement.
54:4
There has come to them reports of the nations that Allah destroyed because of their disbelief and wrongdoing that were sufficient to deter them from their disbelief and wrongdoing.
54:5
What has come to them is complete wisdom to establish the evidence against them. The warnings do not benefit a people who do not have faith in Allah and nor in the last day.
54:6
Since they do not follow the right path, leave them, O Messenger, and turn away from them waiting for the day when the angel appointed to blow the trumpet will call towards a horrific matter, the like of which was not known by created beings previously.
54:7
Their gazes will be lowered. They will come out of their graves as if, in their rush towards the place of reckoning, they are scattered locusts.
54:8
Rushing to the caller of that place. The disbelievers will say: This day is a hard one, because of the difficulty and horrors therein.
54:9
Prior to these people who rejected your invitation, O Messenger, the people of Noah also denied. They denied My servant, Noah (peace be upon him) when I sent him to them. They said about him: He is insane, and they rebuked him with various forms of swearing, abuse and threats if he did not stop inviting them.
54:10
Noah called unto His Lord saying: My people have overwhelmed me and they did not respond to me. So take retribution from them by a punishment that you send down on them.
54:11
So I opened the doors of the sky to continuous torrential water.
54:12
I burst open the ground and it became springs from which water gushed. The water coming down from the sky met with the water gushing from the ground for a matter that Allah had determined in eternity. Everyone was drowned besides those whom Allah saved.
54:13
I carried Noah on a vessel that had planks and nails and I saved him and those with him from drowning.
54:14
This vessel was sailing on the clashing waves of water under My gaze and protection, as a victory for Noah whose people denied him and rejected what he brought from Allah.
54:15
I have left this punishment that I meted out to them as a lesson and admonition. Is there anyone to take a lesson from that?
54:16
How was my punishment to those who denied? How was my warning that I will destroy them?
54:17
I have made the Qur’ān easy to remember, so is there anyone to take heed of the lessons and admonishment that it contains?
54:18
Ad denied their prophet, Hud (peace be upon him). So reflect- O people of Makkah - how was my punishment to them? And how was my warning to others about their punishment?
54:19
I sent on them a severe cold wind on a day of evil and misfortune that will continue with them until they arrive in Hell.
54:20
It picked up people from the ground and threw them on their heads as if they were the trunks of date-palms uprooted from their plantations.
54:21
So reflect- O people of Makkah - how was my punishment to them? And how was my warning to others about their punishment?
54:22
I have made the Qur’ān easy to remember, so is there anyone to take heed of the lessons and admonishment that it contains?
54:23
The Thamud denied what their messenger, Salih (peace be upon him) warned them about.
54:24
They condemningly said: Shall we follow a human from our species, who is alone? If we follow him in this state, we will be astray from what is correct and will be in difficulty.
54:25
Has revelation been sent down to him, whilst he is just one person, and has he been chosen for it instead of all of us? No, in fact he is an imperious liar.
54:26
They will soon come to know on the day of judgment who the imperious liar is, Salih or they?
54:27
I will take out a she-camel from the rock and send it as a test to them. So wait, O Salih - and watch what they do to it and what is done to them, and be patient over their harm.
54:28
Tell them that the water of their well is divided between them and the she-camel: one day for it and one day for them. Each turn will be attended by its owner alone on the day allocated to him.
54:29
They then called their companion to kill the she-camel and he took a sword and killed it, fulfilling the instruction of his people.
54:30
So reflect- O people of Makkah - how was my punishment to them? And how was my warning to others about their punishment?
54:31
I sent on them a single blast which destroyed them and they became like dry trees that are used by a person who makes a fence for his sheep.
54:32
I have made the Qur’ān easy to remember, so is there anyone to take heed of the lessons and admonishment that it contains?
54:33
The people of Lot denied what their messenger, Lot (peace be upon him) warned them about.

I sent on them a wind that threw stones on them except the family of Lot (peace be upon him). The punishment did not afflict them, as I had rescued them from it as he had travelled away with them before the punishment came down in the last part of the night.

I rescued them from the punishment as My favour upon them. I give a recompense similar to the one I gave to Lot to those who are thankful to Allah for His favours.

Lot warned them of My punishment but they disputed with one another about his warning and they rejected it.

Are your disbelievers, O people of Makkah, better than those disbelievers mentioned: The people of Noah, the Ad, the Thamud, the people of Lot and Pharaoh and his people? Or do you have immunity from Allah’s punishment that has been brought by the heavenly scriptures?

Or do these disbelievers from the people of Makkah say: We are all together and well-defended against those who have evil designs against us and who wish to break up our unity?

The group of these disbelievers will be defeated and they will turn their backs before the believers. This occurred on the day of Badr.

In fact, the Hour that they deny is the appointed time when they will be punished. The Hour is more severe and bitter than the punishment of the world that they received on the day of Badr.

Those who are guilty of disbelief and sins are astray from the truth and in punishment and difficulty.
